Businesswoman Brings Joy

Giving thanks for things to come
Yvonne Webb
Published: 21 Dec 2009

Move over Santa, and make way for the real Mrs Claus—Sherylin Michtavy. On December 12, Michtavy brought joy to approximately 100 men and women who have dedicated their lives to taking care of the two most vulnerable groups in our society: children and the elderly. The beneficiaries, from 23 different homes across the country, were brought to the beautifully decorated Royal Hotel, San Fernando, where they were treated to a wonderful Christmas dinner, while live parang band, Flores de San Jose, dished out a repertoire of classic parang and traditional songs of the season. It is the third consecutive year she has bestowed such lavish treatment on the care givers.

Each beneficiary was given also given an envelope containing $400, as a Christmas present. Two lucky people also got to take home the two elegant Christmas trees that formed part of the decor. In keeping with the theme Giving Thanks for Things to Come, the highlight of the evening was when the names of all the homes were written on a piece of paper and placed in a bottle to be drawn for a grand prize of $10,000 that would go towards the home. The lucky home, drawn by Michtavy’s close friend, former San Fernando Mayor Ian Atherly, was Christ Child Convalescent Home. Moruga girl Michtavy migrated to the United States more than 20 years ago, where she founded several successful businesses. Four years ago, after she was introduced to the Phillips Children Home, she founded the St Jude Centre for Children and Seniors and made a commitment to improve their lives.

At the function on Saturday night, she said 40 per cent of the funds from one of her establishments, Fifth On Main, will be dedicated to the care of the homes. Senior Magistrate Lucinda Ragoonanan, who was on hand to celebrate the occasion, described Michtavy as “a woman of great faith and trust in God.” “A woman who has been through many challenges and by God’s grace has conquered and overcome these challenges. A woman who, I believe, has been blessed a hundredfold with wisdom, grace and strength to carry out the enormous tasks given to her by God—all of which she does with humility and honesty.” Dr Jennifer Rouse from the Ministry of Social Services, Division of Ageing, one of Michtavy’s special guests, noted that more people were living beyond their life expectancy and attributed this longevity to laughter.

St. Jude Center for Children

By CECILY ASSON Monday,
January 19 2009

“This is me crying out to you, to do something,” pleaded Senior magistrate Lucina Cardinez-Ragoonanan during a breakfast address Saturday at the Royal Hotel, San Fernando, held to officially launch The St Jude’s Centre for Children and Senior Citizens.

The centre is a privately funded Non Governmental Organisation formed two years ago by Trinidad-born New York benefactor Sherilyn Michtavy, and is based in San Fernando. The foundation’s mission statement is to reach out to thousands of abused and abandoned children and neglected senior citizens.

Cardinez-Ragoonanan told the small gathering that if the country was to improve, everybody including those who held authoritative positions had to adopt a hands-on approach and contribute in a meaningful way just as she has done and has vowed to continue to do, even in her capacity as a sitting magistrate..

She asked: “Who else would do it? It is not easy, but we have the moral authority to do and make things better, and also make things happen.”

She said she became involved in the work with the less fortunate because “I wanted to do it differently,” and to prove she was committed to the cause, Cardinez-Ragoonanan has donated her childhood home on Marryat Street, San Fernando, to a charity foundation in memory of female boxing champ Giselle Salandy, who was recently killed in a vehicular accident.

Saying that she has been heavily criticised for being outspoken, and becoming involved with some of the cases coming before her in the family court, Cardinez-Ragoonanan publicly spoke out for the first time about her decision to adopt an eight-month old baby, one out of a family of three children who had been abandoned by their parents. She said she could not have turned her back on the baby after there was no room for the toddler at the foster home, and instead took the challenge although “I was terrified,” she added.

Jasmine is now three years old, and I have not regretted the decision, she added.

Fifth on Main

While designers around the world were preparing for their big debuts this season, we were getting ready for our very own; a website and shopping experience unlike any other before it.

One that combined the ease of online shopping with a collection of fashions that you could only ever find at the world’s most fabulous boutiques.

More than a simple shopping website, we wanted to create an interactive destination where chic fashion connoisseurs wouldn’t just find the very best from every season-- they’d be rewarded for wearing it.

And so, as models made their way down the catwalks in Milan, Paris, New York, and London, we were assembling the finest collection of couture-quality fashion and readying it here, just for you, at Fifth on Main.

Fifth on Main has worked hard to make shopping online an easy, fun, and fashionable experience. But shouldn’t it also be rewarding? That’s why Fifth on Main doesn’t just carry an outstanding collection of looks for every hour of every day, we’ve also developed a truly fashion-forward rewards program. A full 5% of every item’s purchase price becomes a credit. And that valuable credit can be used in a host of fabulous ways: sure, you can buy even more chic looks from our site, but you can also redeem your rewards for vacations, airline flights, and more outstanding perks as our way of saying thank-you.

At Fifth on Main, every style aficionado can have the look she so desperately wants...and the rewards she so richly deserves.

Though fashion is a driving force behind everything we do, Fifth on Main is also a socially responsible enterprise deeply committed to giving back to those in need. When you purchase any item from Fifth on Main Exclusive Brands, 100% of that purchase goes to the St. Jude Center for Children & Seniors.
